You know how many people study a language for years and still can’t speak it? I am a tutor who focuses on helping people start speaking as soon as possible. I have learned a lot about what methods are or are not very effective for language learning in my journey to fluency in Spanish and speaking some Polish and French, and a little German.
Maybe you are one of those people who studied for years and still can’t speak. Are you tired of memorizing the conjugation of verbs? Are you tired of rote memorization of long lists of isolated vocabulary words? You have studied and studied and you still struggle to put sentences together. You spend too much time thinking about the proper grammatical structures and word order and you still can’t say much. I know that frustration. I have tried many methods and many learning resources and just kept getting frustrated that I couldn’t make much progress speaking my new language. Then I found TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). I tried it and it was amazing! After twenty minutes of Chinese I could speak and understand several sentences. The next day the instructor gave me several paragraphs to read and I could understand them very well. Amazing! I knew I needed to incorporate this method into my language classes so that my students could experience the benefits of learning to speak in a faster and easier way.
In my classes we will learn to conjugate verbs simply by using them in sentences in stories you get to help create. Instead of memorizing lists of vocabulary words in isolation you will learn them in context as we speak. We will use high frequency vocabulary and a lot of repetition. I will use a mixture of different methods and techniques in my classes. I teach with the TPRS method in my classes.
